“Productive or present?” – a small everyday moment reminded me just how close the two really are.

by Dr. Kornelius Kraus

Have you ever felt that little impulse: “Oh, I’ll just do this quickly…”?

At first, it feels efficient. A box ticked. A task done. But often, that quick action adds stress instead of relief. The sneaky feeling of not having done enough creeps in, amplifying the pressure. Social media and AI only push us further into this pattern: faster, more, immediately.

But what happens if we consciously flip the switch?

Today, I decided to try something different. I wanted to “quickly” move some boxes to the floor. Instead of rushing, I slowed down and really experienced the moment:

  • I felt the stability of each box in my hands
  • I listened to the gentle slide as they moved across the floor
  • I stayed present until each box was exactly where it belonged

A small change – but suddenly, the task wasn’t just completed. It was lived.

This little experiment reminded me that productivity and presence are not opposites. They can coexist. When we allow ourselves to slow down and pay attention, even the most mundane tasks can become moments of awareness and calm.

My new experiment for the next 12 weeks:
Not just doing more, but perceiving more. Feeling the texture, hearing the sounds, noticing the breath between tasks.

I’d love to hear from you:

  • Where do you notice yourself saying “just quickly…”?
  • What helps you switch from rushing to being fully present?

Let’s make a small shift together: notice one “just quickly” moment each day and turn it into a lived, mindful experience.

Your turn: slow down, pause, and see what happens when presence and productivity meet.
